Healthy Eating and Why We Need the Right Vitamins

To eat healthily you need to include vitamins in your diet!

The benefits of vitamins are not unknown to Americans, or so we think.

Walk into a typical supermarket or drugstore and you are overwhelmed by the choices of dietary supplements available.

But what benefits do all these vitamins actually provide; do they live up to their reputation?

In Boston at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that the answer may be no.

In this study, researchers looked at vitamins C and E and found no evidence that they decreased the risk of heart disease in men.

On the contrary, their results suggested that vitamin E could actually raise the risk of a bleeding stroke.

In a separate study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers concluded that Calcium and vitamin D supplements did not reduce the risk of breast cancer.

A CNN panel of medical expert had some words to say about these findings and offered their own advice concerning the benefits of vitamins.

Dr. Andrew Weil and Dr. Walter Willett suggest not taking iron or calcium supplements without the direction of a physician due to possible risks.

Dr. Christiane Northrup suggest that women not take iron if they have reached menopause as it is usually unnecessary.

Dr. Melina Jampolis suggests getting proper nutrition from your diet and not from supplements, as the benefits of the supplements are dubious while one never goes wrong with a healthy diet.

So be careful how you get your vitamins!
